It's been a brutal stretch in Orlando. The Magic fired Jamahl Mosley after blowing a 3–1 lead to Detroit, marking their third straight first-round exit. But this is more than just a coaching problem. Desmond Bane — your $36M sniper — taking just 10 shots in a Game 7 is insane. Meanwhile, Paolo Banchero continues to prove he's built for the moment: 27.4 PPG in the playoffs vs 22.2 in the regular season, including 38-9-6 in a road Game 7 after dropping 45 earlier in the series. Even with inconsistent shooting this year, Paolo is clearly not the issue.

Now the real problem, roster construction. Orlando's payroll is projected at $215M+ next season (top-3 in the NBA) and flirting with the second apron — which effectively kills flexibility (no mid-level exception, no buyout market, and limited trade options). They're also light on assets, no lottery pick this year, and their 2026 first is already gone from the Bane deal. Meaning no cap space, no picks, no margin for error. This front office doesn't get an easy reset, they'll have to thread the needle via trades.

That likely starts with Jalen Suggs. The defense is real, but 29.9% FG / 24.1% from three in the playoffs plus injury concerns makes him an interesting moveable piece. Franz Wagner is the tougher call, but availability matters, just 34 games played this year. If you flip one of them for a legit spacer — someone like C.J. McCollum, who hits unrestricted free agency this summer — the fit around Paolo and Bane can gel quickly. Add in Anthony Black and Wendell Carter Jr., who outplayed Duren during the playoffs, and the core looks legit. But the bench finished bottom-5 in scoring this year — they need shooting depth and a coach who can optimize this group. The foundation is there, but how will the Magic's front office execute?

A week ago I had Kansas as one of the biggest off-season losers, and then Bill Self landed Tyran Stokes, the No. 1 recruit in the 2026 class. Self has now landed the top-ranked high school recruit in back-to-back cycles, and Stokes is the second highest-rated commit in Kansas history behind only Andrew Wiggins (2013). The kid averaged 31, 13, and 6 his senior year and dropped 63 in a single game. Kansas's 247Sports recruiting class jumped from outside the top 5 to No. 3 overnight. So yeah, that changes the conversation but it doesn't fix everything.

Because last season Kansas was a defensive juggernaut and an offensive disaster — top-10 defense, but the offense ranked 58th nationally on KenPom. Then they lost their two best interior pieces in Flory Bidunga (Big 12 DPOY, now at Louisville) and Bryson Tiller (Missouri), and Darryn Peterson is off to the NBA. The portal additions are solid but only time will tell — Keanu Dawes (12 PPG at Utah), Christian Reeves (former Duke Blue Devil, 11 PPG & 1.4 BPG at Charleston), and Leroy Blyden Jr. (16 PPG at Toledo, 40% from three — easily the best of the bunch). Solid pieces, but it’s hard to gauge their true impact. The questions about Stokes are real too: NBA scouts love the downhill athleticism but want to see leadership and a reliable jumper.

The real test is the Big 12. Arizona returned it’s front-court while adding elite guard play, making them the early favorite. Houston took a step back losing key pieces, Texas Tech is still figuring things out, and Baylor landed one of the best point guards in the country. Kansas now has a five-star backcourt of Stokes and Taylen Kinney (No. 13 nationally on 247, No. 21 on ESPN), plus Blyden as a legit shooter — but they're running two 6'1 point guards in Kinney and Blyden, which is small even by modern standards. Top-3 in the Big 12 feels realistic. A deep tournament run depends entirely on whether Stokes is who scouts say he is. The roster has range — what it doesn't have yet is proof.
