Opening Tip-Off

NBA Denver Goes Down 3-1
Minnesota vs. Denver has easily lived up to the hype as the best first-round matchup, but not many had Denver down 3–1 after a 112–96 loss on Saturday — especially with Ayo Dosunmu dropping a career-high 43.

NBA Take of the Week: Are the Nuggets Cooked?

Image via Full Timeout (AI-generated)

There’s nothing like playoff basketball — some of the best hoopers in the world putting it all on the line in a win-or-go-home setting. If you told me Denver would be down 3–1 against Minnesota, I would’ve called you a liar. This series has lived up to the hype, but now the question is simple: does Denver actually have a path back?

The Nuggets were my pick to win it all (outside of OKC), but injuries have been a real handicap all season — with Aaron Gordon, Cam Johnson, Peyton Watson, and Christian Braun all missing time. That played into Denver finishing with a #21 defensive rating in the regular season. The defense has improved in the playoffs (top-10), but the bigger issue is the offense falling off a cliff. After finishing #1 offensively, they’re now sitting at #12, with Jamal Murray shooting 37% from the field and 22.2% from three, while Jokic is at 39% from the floor and 18.5% from three (5–27) against Gobert.

Being down 3–1 is a different level of pressure — only 13 teams in NBA history have come back to win a series, and Denver is the only team to do it twice in the same postseason (2020). If there’s any team you trust to make it interesting, it’s them. But this doesn’t get fixed with effort — it’s going to take a real offensive reset to flip this series.

CBB Take of the Week: Early Offseason Recap

After the NCAA Championship, it didn’t take long for the portal to flood with talent, and we’re already seeing a clear split — some teams reloading, others rebuilding from scratch. The early winners have been aggressive. Louisville landed Flory Bidunga (Big 12 DPOY) and paired him with Jackson Shelstad (15.6 PPG). Indiana quietly built one of the deepest transfer groups in the country, adding size, scoring, and shooting across the board. And Texas continues to stack talent, bringing in David Punch (14.1 PPG, 6 RPG) and Isaiah Johnson (16.9 PPG, 37.8% from three) to strengthen the backcourt.

On the other side, some programs are taking real hits. St. John’s is essentially starting over after losing key senior production, with only a couple notable additions so far. Wisconsin has major gaps after losing John Blackwell (19.1 PPG) and their leading scorer to graduation. And Kansas is in a weird spot — losing Bidunga, Bryson Tiller, and Darryn Peterson while leaning heavily on a freshman class with minimal portal reinforcement.

The portal isn’t just about talent — it’s about roster balance, and right now some teams look complete while others still have major questions to answer. With questions surrounding Bill Self’s long-term future, Kansas is one of the more interesting situations to monitor heading into the season.
